Use Thread from Claude, Codex & other AI tools (MCP)

Let an AI assistant search your Thread, save notes and create documents — with a connection you control.

Thread speaks the Model Context Protocol (MCP), so AI tools like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and Claude Desktop can work with your notes: search and read them, create Spaces, save notes, create documents and tasks — and, if you allow it, edit Spaces, notes and documents.

Connect

  1. Sign in and turn on sync (Settings → Account). AI tools work with what’s synced to your account.
  2. Open Settings → Integrations → Connect an AI tool.
  3. Choose what it may do (Read only or Read & write, optionally Allow editing existing Spaces, notes and documents), which Spaces it may see, and when the connection expires.
  4. Copy the token (shown once) and the setup snippet for your tool — Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Claude Desktop — and paste it where shown.

What you can ask

  • “Search my Thread for the Riga lease and summarise what we decided.”
  • “Create a Space for my new novel and add the project notes there.”
  • “Save this meeting summary as a note in my Baltic Space.”
  • “Create a Thread document ‘Launch plan’ with these steps as to-dos.”
  • “Add a task in Thread to book flights, due Friday.”
  • “Update the premise note and append today’s findings to my Research log.” (needs Allow editing)

Everything an AI tool creates appears on your devices after the next sync, like changes from another device, marked Written by the connection’s name. Until you Verify it, Thread treats it as the assistant’s words, not yours: Decision [Topic]: … lines are remembered as suggestions and never override what you wrote yourself.

Sources & freshness

Every result an AI tool gets includes whether the note is current, when a person last confirmed it and who wrote it. Notes that are outdated, due for review or unconfirmed for a year come with a warning, and tools are asked to cite the note for each statement and to mention when it may be out of date. See Keep notes current.

Privacy & safety

  • Items and Spaces marked Don’t use with AI are never shown to AI tools; Keep on this device only never reaches the cloud at all.
  • A connection limited to certain Spaces can only read and write there.
  • Thread Team shared Spaces are not generally available yet. Current connections are limited to the Spaces you explicitly authorize.
  • Tokens are stored as a one-way hash; revoke a connection any time in Settings → Integrations and it stops working immediately. They expire automatically (30, 90 or 365 days).
  • Every call is logged. Edits never delete history: your devices keep the previous version of an edited document in Version history.
  • In read-only mode (trial or subscription ended) AI tools can still search and read, but not write.

Troubleshooting

  • “No matches” for something you know exists: check that sync is on and the device you wrote it on has synced (Settings → Account → Sync now).
  • “Invalid or revoked token”: create a new connection and update your tool’s configuration.
  • Codex: make sure the environment variable from the snippet (ORBIT_THREAD_TOKEN) is set in the shell that starts Codex.
