Offline — saved on this device

Screenshots, notes apps, a drawer of paper. None of it searchable.

The useful bits of life are scattered: an idea in a messaging app, a warranty in a drawer, a recipe link in a browser tab, a plan in your head. You only miss them when you need them.

Thread gives them one private place that is faster to save into than a notes app, and searchable down to the text in a photographed letter.

How it works, step by step.

  1. Step 1

Capture before the thought is gone

Install Thread on your phone’s home screen and long-press the icon for Capture, Ask or Search. Type, paste a link, or record a voice note — Thread says Saved. as soon as it’s on the device, online or not.

  2. Step 2

    Photograph the paper

Snap letters, receipts, manuals and handwritten notes. Local OCR reads the printed text on your device, so a photo becomes something you can search — no OCR service, no upload required.

  3. Step 3

Write down what you know about your life

A line like Fact [Car]: Tyres changed in October or Preference: Contractors with fixed quotes only becomes lasting memory you can ask about later — and you can correct it when things change.

    Memory syntax

Fact [Car]: Winter tyres fitted on 14 October.

Preference: Contractors with fixed quotes only.

Decision [Kitchen]: Renovate after summer, budget €15k.

  4. Step 4

Get a nudge when something needs checking

Set a Review by… date on a contract, a policy or a price list. When it’s due, Thread labels it — and answers that rely on it say so.

When does the boiler warranty end, and who installed it?

The manufacturer warranty runs until March 2028. It was installed by Kessler Heating, and your note says the annual service is due each October.

Example content. Written answers need a local model or your own API key; without AI, Ask assembles an answer from your decisions and matching passages.

Private by default, not by promise.

Thread stores your content in your browser first and works without an account. Sync is optional and EU-hosted; anything marked “Keep on this device only” never leaves the device. AI stays off until you choose a local model or your own key.

See exactly how data moves

Practical questions.

Is it safe for personal documents?

Everything starts on your device. With sync on, a copy is stored in an EU-hosted database protected per workspace, and files travel between your devices through an end-to-end encrypted relay. For the most sensitive items, use “Keep on this device only”.

Do I need an account?

No. Without an account Thread runs on one device. Create an account when you want sync between phone and computer; your 30-day trial starts then.

What if I stop paying?

Nothing is deleted. Your Thread becomes read-only — you can still open, search and export everything.

Can it read handwriting?

Local OCR is designed for printed text such as letters, receipts and slides. Clear handwriting may work partly; don’t rely on it.
