Pages, a conversation, or the work itself.
Notes apps and Notion are for arranging pages. An AI chat keeps a conversation. Orbit Thread keeps the notes, files and decisions, and cites the source when you ask.
Notes apps, AI chat, and Orbit Thread
What it is built for
Notes apps and Notion
Built around writing and arranging pages.
- You decide the structure: pages, databases, folders.
- The useful bit is often a page you remember to open.
- A file, a photo or a voice memo may live somewhere else.
What it is built for
An AI chat
Built around a conversation.
- The thread remembers what was said in that chat.
- Notes, PDFs and earlier decisions stay outside it unless you paste them again.
- The answer is not attached to a source you can open in your own material.
What it keeps
Orbit Thread
Built around getting the material back.
- Notes, documents, links, images and voice sit in one workspace, on this device first.
- Search runs here, including text inside a PDF page or a recording.
- Ask cites the note, page or timestamp, and a decision keeps its earlier version.
A citation is an invitation to look.
Thread does not turn a model’s sentence into a fact. It retrieves from what you saved and shows the note, page or moment behind a sourced statement. You still decide whether to rely on it.
AI that remembers your work
What stays when the chat ends: decisions, files and the earlier version of a plan.
Local-first workspace
On this device first. EU sync and a model only if you turn them on.
Import Notion pages
Bring the pages you choose into Thread. The rest of the wiki can stay where it is.
Notion alternative
When the job is getting notes, files and decisions back — and which parts of a Notion wiki should stay in Notion.
Obsidian alternative
A browser workspace for notes, PDFs, images and voice — and when a markdown vault is still the better home.
NotebookLM alternative
For work you keep, not a notebook you upload for one sitting. Sources stay on this device unless you choose otherwise.
What this comparison is, and is not
Is Orbit Thread a replacement for Notion?
Notion is for writing and arranging pages. Thread is for getting notes, files and decisions back, with search and cited answers. You can import Notion pages you choose; Thread does not try to be a wiki you design.
Does chat memory do the same job?
A chat keeps the conversation. Thread keeps the work: the files, the notes and the decisions, including when a decision changes. An answer can point at that material so you can check it.
Do I have to connect a model?
No. Capture, document extraction and word search work with AI off. A local model or your own API key is optional, and Thread does not resell AI.
Can a team share a workspace today?
Shared workspaces are not available yet. Thread today is the individual product: one person’s notes, with optional sync across that person’s devices.
