NotebookLM alternative

A NotebookLM alternative for work you keep.

NotebookLM is a hosted notebook: you add sources and ask inside that session. Orbit Thread is the workspace those sources already live in — notes, files, voice and decisions — with search on this device and citations you can open.

Choose Thread when

  • The material is ongoing work, not a set of files uploaded for one question.
  • You want capture — a note, a link, a file, a recording — as well as answers.
  • You want a local model, your own API key, or no model at all.
  • A decision changes, and the earlier version should still be there.

Stay with NotebookLM when

  • You want NotebookLM’s hosted notebook, Audio Overview, or the study tools in that product.
  • Uploading sources to Google for that notebook is fine for the work.

Side by side

What it holds

NotebookLM. Sources you add to a notebook.

Orbit Thread. An ongoing workspace: notes, documents, links, images, voice and decisions.

Where it starts

NotebookLM. Google’s hosted notebook.

Orbit Thread. This browser. No Google account. No Orbit account until you want sync.

Answers

NotebookLM. Cited chat over the sources in that notebook.

Orbit Thread. Ask cites the note, page or timestamp in your own material. With no model connected, Ask can still assemble an answer from decisions and matching passages.

What it does not do

NotebookLM. It is not your capture inbox or decision history.

Orbit Thread. It does not generate an Audio Overview, flashcards or a study guide.

Privacy control

NotebookLM. Sources are in the Google notebook.

Orbit Thread. “Keep on this device only” is never uploaded. “Don’t use with AI” is searchable and never sent to a model.

How people start

Keep the source where you captured it

Save the note, drop the PDF, or record the voice note in Thread. Search and Ask use that material. You do not assemble a separate notebook each time the question comes back.

Practical questions

Is Orbit Thread a NotebookLM replacement?

It replaces the job of asking a kept body of work and checking the source. It does not replace NotebookLM’s audio overviews or study tools.

Do I upload my files to Google?

No. Capture stays on this device. A cloud model is used only if you connect your own key, and then only the relevant excerpts go to the provider you chose.

Can I use it with no AI?

Yes. Capture, file text extraction and word search work with AI off.

What does it cost?

A 30-day trial needs no credit card. After that, Thread is €10/month or €96/year. If you don’t subscribe, the workspace stays readable, searchable and exportable.
